Crewe Alexandra lost their final game as Fleetwood Town ensured League One safety at Highbury Stadium.

The hosts struck twice in four first-half minutes with Bobby Grant opening their account off the underside of the crossbar from distance.

Striker Devante Cole soon added a second goal from David Ball’s delivery.

Grant threatened early as George Ray cleared well and Ben Garratt also thwarted him, until the ex-Rochdale forward put his side ahead following Stefan Scougall’s corner.

Moments later Cole missed a great chance from Ball’s cross before the duo combined again for the son of former Manchester United striker Andy to double the advantage.

Ball then fired wide of the mark and Cole also slipped his finish across the face of goal following the interval.

Meanwhile, Ollie Turton and Zoumana Bakayogo were off-target in reply and substitute Daniel Udoh denied by keeper Chris Maxwell late on.
