Crewe Alexandra were hit by an early double-blast as Preston North End won 3-1 at Gresty Road in the Capital One Cup first round.
Jordan Hugill knocked in a fifth-minute penalty and Will Keane soon added another goal to leave the visitors appearing comfortably in charge.
However, recent signing Adam King reduced the deficit with a low drive before the break, and it required a late strike from Josh Brownhill to finally settle it.
It certainly wasn’t the best start for the hosts as Hugill was immediately fouled by goalkeeper Ben Garratt and took retribution himself from the penalty spot.
Jon Guthrie’s weak defensive header on thirteen minutes then fell for Manchester United loanee Keane to make no mistake.
Hugill might have had another when wastefully shooting straight at Garratt, although it was the home side next on target as King found the net from the edge of the area nine minutes before the break.
Brownhill struck the outside of a post during the second-half while keeper Jordan Pickford denied Marcus Haber on the line.
The visitors replied with Keane wide of the mark and Greg Cunningham heading onto the top of the crossbar before Brownhill”s late third finally clinched it.
