Youth Cup – Comfortable Win Sees Alex Through

|

A first-half brace from Connor Salisbury and a second-half goal from Joel Tabiner saw Crewe Alexandra defeat Grimsby Town in the FA Youth Cup this evening in front of the 411 in attendance.

Manager Lee Bell named Tom Booth in goal with a back 4 of Sam Bhatti, Connor O’Riordan, captain Zac Williams and Sean Lawton in front of him. In midfield were Tabiner, Owen Lunt and Charlie Finney while Ty Webster and Matus Holicek started either side of Salisbury up front. On the bench were Zak Kempster-Down, Sam Crolla, Lucas Sant, Lewis Nolan and goalkeeper Jack Flint.

The Alex almost took the lead in the opening minute with Tabiner having an effort that was saved by the Grimsby keeper before Salisbury had an effort cleared off the line by a Mariners defender. The Welsh forward would give the Alex the lead in the 27th minute after a great run from Williams where he took on a number of defenders before finding the Alex number 9 to curl one into the bottom corner. He would add his second of the game during stoppage-time by forcing the defence into a mistake before curling past the keeper with his left foot.

The second-half was more of the same with the hosts dominating with Tabiner and Salisbury both having efforts before the midfielder would add the third with a 25-yard chip over the goalkeeper.
