Manager Steve Davis is searching for a centre-back with League One experience to fill the void left by the recent departure of skipper David Artell.

The 31-year-old was released after leading Alex to victory in their Wembley play-off final with Cheltenham Town last month. That leaves the squad with just Harry Davis, Adam Dugdale and, if necessary and he agrees new terms, Kelvin Mellor, available.

“I am looking for a player with League One experience,” Davis confirmed to Crewe’s official website. “It doesn’t make a difference to me if it is a 30-year-old or a 25-year-old as long as they have played in the league and know what it is about.

“We do have a few in mind,” he added. “We will target them to make sure we get the right one.”
