Luke Varney is set for a move to Portsmouth this week after a whirlwind 12 months that saw him go from Derby County reserve to Premier League star.

Still a massive favourite at Gresty Road, it was great to see Luke secure that loan move to Blackpool where he’d go on to impress in over 30 performances and score winners at the likes of Liverpool. A far cry from the 20 year old part time footballer we took from Quorn eight years ago.

It does’t look like Varney’s stay in the Premiership will be prolonged unfortunately, in fact his stay at Bloomfield Road itself looks to be over. With Blackpool relegated, manager Ian Holloway seems to have ditched the idea of signing Varney on a permanent deal whilst Portsmouth move in with a £750,000 offer.

With Varney moving away from Derby and Robbie Savage retiring, the Rams are looking to keep up their ex-Alex quota by swooping for former Alex keeper Adam Legzdins. For a reported £200,000.

It’s not bad going for a keeper who left the Alex last summer after making just the seven appearances. It was however the lack of appearances that saw Legzdins depart, despite being offered a new deal at the Alex he decided to take his services to Burton Albion instead.

Meanwhile, the Nicky Maynard is quietly rumbling on in the background. Both Leicester and Forest are reported to be interested with the former said to have had a £2-3Million bid rejected last week.

However, new newspaper reports now suggest Nicky is only interested in a move to the Premiership this summer.

The Alex are set to receive 20% of any profit Bristol City make on Nicky, but with only a year left on his contract and only Championship clubs moving, it may not be as lucrative as Dario would have liked.
