Elding Looking For England Return

The expensive flop that is Anthony Elding is looking to return to the English game after six months in Hungary.

After a £150,000 move from Leeds to the Alex back in 2008, Elding became one of the more expensive flops in our recent history. Scoring just one goal in two years Elding failed to win over all of Steve Holland, Gudjon Thordarson and Dario Gradi, eventually being shipped out on loan to the likes of Lincoln City and Kettering (Where he was just as ineffective).

After a torrid time here he finally ended his association with the club back in November, leaving the club by mutual consent despite having 18 month left on his contract.

Signing for Hungarian club Ferencváros in January, Elding attempted to rebuild the goalscoring reputation he had built at Stockport and with 8 goals in 15 games for Ferencváros he certainly made some impact (more than he made here anyway).

However, with Ferencváros’s English manager Craig Short returning to the UK to manage Notts County, Elding is looking to follow his former manager.

With Ferencváros apparently looking for a fee of £20,000 for the striker, Elding is reportedly training (having a trial?) with Championship side Watford.

We Alex fans may scoff at it, but there does seem to be a worry trend of our flops somehow going on to bigger and better things these days. Only 12 months ago Eugen Bopp was Portsmouth’s number one target so stranger things have happened.
