Crewe Alexandra fell to an early goal from Francois Zoko in their relegation clash at bottom club Stevenage.
Neil Etheridge returned between the posts for the visitors after rejoining them on loan from Fulham. But he was beaten on just five minutes when Zoko turned Mark Ellis inside the area and fired home.
Chuks Aneke snatched at a half-chance in reply before heading a Byron Moore cross wide – and in turn requiring attention for a clash of heads.
The visitors were finding their opponents a tough challenge but went close to an equaliser with Aneke once again meeting a Moore cross and heading directly at Chris Day.
Etheridge was required to save from Michael Doughty early in the second period while opposite number Day smothered an Aneke through pass intended for Mathias Pogba.
That pair combined again with Aneke sending a 20-yard effort wide of the mark and Pogba also heading a Moore cross onto the top of the net at the far post.
Goalscorer Zoko shot wide at the other end before Pogba’s response was deflected behind and Brad Inman nodded over from Moore.
The Alex were still pressing for a vital equaliser and Aneke hoisted a further attempt over while substitute Vadaine Oliver later struck an Inman assist wide.
