Crewe Alexandra pair Luke Murphy and Matt Tootle should return to training later this week. Murphy [knee] and Tootle [groin] were both absent for the weekend draw with Championship side Bolton Wanderers at Gresty Road.

But Kelvin Mellor is still out with a foot injury while veteran goalkeeper Steve Phillips is also currently sidelined by a knee problem. Both appear set to miss the Capital One Cup first round tie with Hartlepool United on Saturday week.

Meanwhile, striker AJ Leitch-Smith is struggling to make tomorrow night’s friendly with Huddersfield Town due to a hairline fracture of his toe. The knock was suffered in the 1-1 draw against Bolton and has since forced him out of training.

In his absence Max Clayton is likely to move alongside Mathias Pogba with recent signing Michael West coming in on the flank.
