Drop in the Ocean?

Great News! After intensive negotiations the FAPL and FL have agreed a 90 million package to be distributed amongst the football league members over the next three years.

The PL has recognised the need for some of the Premiership new found wealth to filter down the football pyramid. This is a step in the right direction and will help clubs to fund youth development and community based events.

For the forthcoming season League Two sides will receive a figure of just 68,987, whilst a side in League One, for example Crewe will receive 103,480 whilst the championship payments will be on a sliding scale.

This is dependant on their league position, £775,909 is the least that can be expected for a Championship club whilst at the top range it could be as high as 1,383,602. Clubs already in receipt of parachute payments will not receive these payments.

It is welcoming news that Premier League has announced this deal but the way in which the money has been shared does leave a lot to be desired. On the face of it appears that the majority of the cash will be going to top championship clubs in order to bridge the gulf between the PL and the top championship sides.

Surely teams like Bury and Macclesfield are deserving of more money than just over 68,987, this figure is merely a drop in the ocean for them.

Teams like Bury who have produced players like David Nugent need more help if they are to continue to develop and bring through young english players.

Great that this money is available but I believe this has all come about for the PL personal benefits and not in order to help lower league teams produce good english players.

Are the PL bothered about youth development in the lower leagues? It appears their only interest is to make sure teams coming up are competitive and don`t just go straight back down and this money will help them. Is it that the plan to introduce a Premier League Two? – I wouldn`t put it past them.
