Striker Paddy Madden claimed a goal in each half as Crewe Alexandra went down to a 2-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United.
Madden headed in Tom Hopper’s cross on ten minutes to earn his side the lead before adding a second after the break.
Midfielder Sean McAllister also hit the underside of the crossbar, while Marcus Haber, Billy Bingham and Jon Guthrie had opportunities at the other end.
Crewe once again conceded an early goal when Ben Nugent couldn’t prevent Hopper from delivering for danger-man Madden to head in from close-range.
McAllister nearly doubled that with his shot-on-the-turn coming back off the woodwork while Brad Inman curled a reply wide.
Neither Haber nor Guthrie could find the required finish following the break and Bingham’s shot was deflected over.
However, goalscorer Madden needed no second invitation with an angled 65th minute finish – and later curled another effort wide from inside the area.
