Done At The Death; Pressure Piles On

In what was one of the dullest games in a long time we were denied a point right at the death.

Jason Price, an old foe, capitalised on some shoddy Alex defending in stoppage time to take all three points down south, and we could feel hard done to.

It wasn’t the greatest of games, both teams cancelled each other out with good organisation for the large part and both struggled to create many clear cut chances, the best for Millwall coming mid-way through the second half; David Martin crashing one off the crossbar following a corner.

At the other end the best chances fell to Sigurdsson, who went inches wide from a 20 yard shot, and Shaun Miller who forced a good save from the keeper

But as both sets of fans prepared to make their way home disaster struck the home side. A mix up inside the 6 yard area from David Martin’s shot in the 91st minute saw Jason Price take advantage of a fumble from John Ruddy. There could yet be protests that Price was offside but it’d be in vain.

I suppose it’s a sign of how far we’ve come, feeling we should have had a comfortable point against the 3rd placed side, but it’s gutting none the less.

It’s not helped our position at the bottom either. Between Leyton Orient in 15th and Yeovil in 21st, the first relegation spot, there is just three points difference. It’s even more twitchy when you see that Yeovil (21st) and Northampton (20th) have two games in hand over ourselves along with Brighton (22nd) and Hereford (23rd). The comfort you can take is that games in hand count for nothing until they’re won.

The good side of today is that we now return to a less hectic schedule of one game a week. We saw some lacklustre performances from the likes of Miller, Pope, Donaldson, Carrington, Sheehan & Ruddy today, with lots of tired legs in the second half; Gudjon’s decision to give them a couple of days off ahead of next week’s trip to Swindon can only be a good thing.

Swindon’s a big, big game and a defeat would really put us deep into it, but it’s winnable as is Hartlepool at home the following week. Two wins from those two would make survival pretty likely.

We do need a win though, the fantastic run is slowly but surely fading into a poor run, no win in four or one win in six isn’t survival form but if the players can recuperate this next few days and come back strong for Swindon then I still see us surviving with relative ease.
