Crewe Alexandra crashed to a heavy home defeat to League One newcomers Rochdale as Matt Done scored a hat-trick.

Full debutant Marcus Haber netted twice at the other end but further goals from Ian Henderson and Peter Vincenti left the visitors out of sight.

It actually started well for the Railwaymen with Haber holding off a challenge and giving them the lead on nine minutes, only for Henderson to equalise from Jamie Allen’s cross on the half-hour.

Done then tapped in a second from skipper Henderson’s assist just ahead of the interval, and George Ray’s weak back-header allowed him to double his own tally seven minutes into the second period.

However, Haber headed in Matt Tootle’s cross to offer some hope to home supporters, but that soon disappeared in the 66th minute as Vincenti drove past recalled goalkeeper Ben Garratt.

And Done completed his treble when running clear six minutes later to leave Alex manager Steve Davis with much to contemplate ahead of the weekend.
