Defensive Disasterclass Sees Defeat To Mariners

|

Goals from John McAtee, George Lloyd and substitute Tom Dickson-Peters saw Grimsby Town pick up an easy victory against Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Manager Lee Bell made three changes from Tuesday’s 1-1 home draw against Mansfield Town with defenders Billy Sass-Davies and captain Luke Offord and forward David Amoo coming into the team as Kelvin Mellor and Rod McDonald both missing out due to injury with Bassala Sambou dropped down to the bench.

The opening chance and goal fell to the visitors in the 3rd minute with McAtee taking advantage of some slack defending to score from just outside the area into the bottom corner before Callum Ainley would curl a free-kick just wide of the goal a couple of minutes later. The Alex could have had a penalty on 20 minutes after a potential handball before the lead was doubled just after the half-hour with Regan Griffiths dispossessed with Lloyd also scoring from outside the area.

After a half-time treble change with saw Charlie Colkett, Ryan Finnigan and debutant Sean Robertson coming on for Sass-Davies, Griffiths and Conor Thomas, Clifton would have an effort that didn’t test Dave Richards before Lee Bell would make his final two substitutes on the hour-mark with Lachlan Brook and Sambou replacing Ainley and Amoo. The third came with 6 minutes to go as Amoo’s cross-cum-shot was converted by Dickson-Peters

The next games for the Alex host Leyton Orient on Tuesday before travelling to Crawley Town next Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

A completely embarrassing performance to be honest.

We conceded one of the softest goals that you’re going to see to open the scoring early on before Griffiths was caught in possession taking too much time on the ball for the second. The changes at the break gave a small boost (Finnigan in particular was trying to create something from a deep position) while Grimsby got themselves into a defensive shape that we didn’t look capable of breaking down at any point before they added their third on the break.
