Defenders Matt Tootle and Kelvin Mellor could both soon be back in action for Crewe Alexandra.

The pair are currently working on their fitness ahead of the new season after Tootle recovered from a groin strain and Mellor underwent a recent ankle operation.

Meanwhile, winger Byron Moore felt no ill-effects from the dead-leg suffered against Huddersfield Town whilst being involved in the midweek friendly with Barnsley.

It means Crewe’s only longer-term issue concerns experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips, who remains sidelined with a knee injury and awaits further reports from his consultant.

His absence should witness deputy Alan Martin finally earning his senior debut against Hartlepool United in the Capital One Cup this weekend.
