Defender Is Next Priority

After the signing in the last week of winger Joel Grant with forward Calvin Zola and goalkeeper Steve Collis having agreed to sign contracts, the next transfer target for the Alex is likely to be a defender.

The club’s defensive record has been one of the worst in the league of the past two seasons despite the return of Chris McCready last summer and arrival of Danny O’Donnell from Liverpool.

Assistant Manager Neil Baker told superalex.co.uk strenthening in defence is priority.

He said: ‘I would certainly say the next priority is to bring in a defender and we have names in mind.

‘We have been a bit light in that area for a while, and it’s probably going to be a centre-half we’re look to bring in.

‘A lot will depend on whether Danny Woodards stays. We might need a utility player who can fill in anywhere across the defence.’

Steve Holland has hinted in the past he would like an experienced player in his back four who is commanding and like a brick wall.

With a list drawn up by the management team, expect some movement in the next few days as the club attempts to finalise it’s squad for the new season before the pre-seaon training camp and game in Bulgaria which departs on Saturday.
