Crewe Alexandra defender Matt Tootle has described how manager Steve Davis helped turn his career around.

“I hated getting up in the morning” – Matt Tootle

The 22-year-old found himself struggling for form before Davis took charge at Gresty Road twelve months ago.

But a welcome resurgence in the Alex’s fortunes was soon matched by a similar upturn in his own career.

“Steve has been terrific with me, he helped me through a tough time,” Tootle admitted to the Crewe Chronicle. “When he took over I wasn’t playing well or enjoying my football anymore. I hated getting up in the morning.

“It wasn’t the club. It was because of how I was playing and how deeply I take my football,” he continued. “Since then he [Davis] has changed it and my performances have got better and I am enjoying football again, I’m really fit and playing well.”
