Wales Under-21 defender George Ray has been challenged to fill the void caused by the departure of Mark Ellis from Crewe Alexandra.

“One of the reasons we allowed Mark to leave was that we have to give George a go” – Steve Davis

Manager Steve Davis wants to see the
20-year-old Warrington-born prospect really pushing on and forcing himself into regular contention.

Ray actually started last season in the
side but was restricted to ten senior appearances after soon falling out of favour. He also recently featured for the Welsh against their English counterparts.

“One of the reasons we allowed Mark to leave was that we have to give George a go. He is 20 now and a Wales Under-21 International, so this is the time for him,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “Now he has to get into the team, perform on a consistent basis and do well. If we don’t give George a go at 20 then when do we give him a go?”
