Goals from Barry Bannan and Lee Gregory saw Sheffield Wednesday defeat Crewe Alexandra in League 1 at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday afternoon.
Manager David Artell made two changes from Tuesday’s 2-0 home win against Lincoln City with Scott Robertson returning in midfield with Chris Porter starting up front as forwards Ben Knight and Mika Mandron missing out.
The opening chance of the game came in the 13th minute with Gregory heading wide before the first Alex chance came 11 minutes later with left wing-back Rio Adebisi’s shot deflected wide. The visitors took the lead in the 27th minute with Bannan cutting in from the right before firing past Dave Richards in the goal with the Alex getting their third penalty of the week as Bannan was to adjudged to have handled Robertson’s cross – Porter would miss the penalty as well as the rebound thanks to two saves from Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
The lead would be doubled a couple of minutes into the second half with Gregory heading in a cross from the right before Tom Lowery would have an effort saved by Peacock-Farrell midway through the half. Richards would deny Callum Paterson
Our next couple of games sees the Alex travel to Gillingham next Saturday before hosting Wigan Athletic on Boxing Day.
What can we take out of this game?
Getting anything out of the game without having most of our forward options through illness or injury was always going to be difficult against a team that was relegated out of the Championship last season.
That said, putting the penalty away (which Porter has done for the 14 or 15 other ones he’s taken for the Alex) and maybe getting on the end of one of the crosses from Williams in the first half and Rio at the end and maybe we could have come away with at least a point.
