Manchester United aim to use recent signing from Crewe Alexandra, Nick Powell, in a central midfield role.

The teenager finished with sixteen goals for Alex last season before completing a dream move to United in a deal which could eventually be worth around £6m to Crewe.

But Old Trafford chief Sir Alex Ferguson wants to see him eventually operating in a deeper role at his new club.

“We see him as a central midfield player,” Ferguson explained to BBC Sport. “Crewe played him as a forward in behind the striker, but I asked a question of Dario Gradi as to whether he thought central midfield was his position.

“That’s what he thinks, and Nick thinks that’s his position too, so we’re all in accord on that,” he added.

Powell has already been named in a 22-man United squad travelling to South Africa and China for some pre-season action earlier today.
