Debutant Suffers Defeat At Grimsby

|

Goals from Gavan Holohan and Danilo Orsi saw Grimsby Town defeat Crewe Alexandra at Blundell Park yesterday.

Manager Lee Bell made three changes from Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Leyton Orient as 18-year-old goalkeeper Tom Booth came in for his first team debut after impressing at Nantwich Town this season with Callum Ainley and Elliott Nevitt also earning recalls as out went Dave Richards, Courtney Baker-Richardson and Joel Tabiner, who all dropped down to the bench where they are joined by Connor O’Riordan, who has missed the last couple of games through injury.

The opening chance fell to the hosts in the 9th minute with Booth denying Holohan before he would open the scoring 4 minutes later, the Alex switching off from a quickly-taken free-kick from Harry Clifton with the midfielder firing across Booth into the bottom corner. The visitors’ first chance came 9 minutes from the break with Chris Long finding fellow forward Dan Agyei who dragged his effort wide of the goal.

After half-chances for Rod McDonald and substitute Baker-Richardson, the defender would flick a corner goalwards which was cleared off the line on 74 minutes before the lead was doubled 7 minutes from time with Orsi heading home a right-sided from close range. Substitute Lachlan Brook would have a chance in stoppage time but could only shoot straight at Max Crocombe.

The next games for the Alex see them have their final two home games of the season, firstly Swindon Town this Saturday before Bradford City are the visitors next Wednesday night.

What can we take out of this game?

It was a good debut for Booth who could do nothing about either goal (I thought that Bell would have held off on his debut until the Swindon game so he could make his debut at home – Richards’ performance in the last game may have been a big factor) but it’s more soft goals conceded by the club, especially the second which should have been marked better in the middle as Orsi had the freedom of the 6-yard box to head an easy chance into the goal.
