Nantwich Town’s Steve Davis is looking set to replace Neil Baker as Gudjon’s assistant manager.
The former Alex defender has been mentioned as a possible replacement for outbound Baker recently and this week confirmed his desire to move up the football ladder after a few fantastic years as Dabbers boss.
Speaking to The Sentinel, Davis said:
‘I have spoken to my chairman and he knows I am ambitious and want to move on at some point.
‘I want to test myself at a higher level. I have made that clear, whether that be at Crewe or somewhere else.
‘If it doesn’t happen to be a club locally, then I am quite happy to travel.
‘I am looking for the opportunity to further my career, be that as manager, assistant or first-team coach.’
So it would seem we have found the run away favourite for the job, man mooted by some fans as Steve Holland’s successor back in November.
Davis’s Alex links are still strong having played over 150 games for the reds in Dario’s early days. He went on to have a relatively successful career with Barnsley and Burnley amongst others before returning to the region as manager of Northwich Victoria.
His time as Vics boss was sour however, resigning only a couple of months into the season. Taking over Nantwich in 2004 has seen him gain two promotions to the Northern Premier League and FA Vase victory in 2007.
His son is also part of the youth set up at the club.
