Manager Steve Davis has asked fans to try and support young Crewe Alexandra striker Max Clayton.

“I think he has been badly advised but that his prerogative and the prerogative of his agent” – Steve Davis

Clayton was booed at the weekend when replacing skipper Abdul Osman from the bench during the 3-0 defeat to Walsall.

That follows his failure to agree to a new contract at Gresty Road. And while Davis naturally doesn’t agree with that decision he was nevertheless firmly backing the England youth international.

“The booing has affected Max, because he is only just 19 and he is desperate to do well for Crewe,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “He is a local lad and he wants to be playing well and helping Crewe Alexandra.

“The situation with his contract is not ideal and I don’t agree with it,” he added. “I think he has been badly advised but that his prerogative and the prerogative of his agent.”
