Manager Steve Davis admitted his side rather rode their luck on occasions before completing a much-needed 2-1 victory over Hartlepool United at Gresty Road.

“I was shouting over to Murph to get Harry to take it” – Steve Davis

The Alex were forced to recover from the shock of conceding an early goal and on loan Chuks Aneke and defender Mark Ellis were both on target after Mathias Pogba had already missed a penalty.

“In fairness to Hartlepool, they could have probably got something from the game, and probably deserved something from the game,” Davis admitted to Crewe’s official website. “We wobbled a bit at the end, but the result was important today and I am pleased with that.”

Regarding their wasted penalty opportunity, Davis added: “I was shouting over to Murph to get Harry [Davis] to take it, but Murph was reluctant to switch the taker that late. As long as he scored I was fine with that, but I have learnt from that and it won’t happen again. I am the one that should make the big decisions and that was a big decision.”
