Manager Steve Davis has revealed Crewe Alexandra only lost out on defender Callum Kennedy at the last moment.

Davis believed he was close to securing the services of the 23-year-old Swindon Town left-back after talks at the end of the season, until he was eventually lured away by an offer from Scunthorpe United.

“We lost out on Callum because Scunthorpe came in and offered him a better deal,” Davis admitted to Alex’s official website. “We couldn’t compete with that and his agent said it was an offer that he couldn’t turn down.

“We have other targets,” he assured. “You never go with just one target and have three or four options. We have missed out on him but you move on to the next target.”
