Crewe Alexandra are ready to compromise in their negotiations to keep defensive prospect Kelvin Mellor.

The 21-year-old is yet to re-sign for the club and was recently linked with a possible move to Championship outfit Derby County.

Mellor is currently away on holiday and Alex manager Steve Davis needs a final decision sooner rather than later. He was though hoping an agreement could still be reached upon his return.

“Giving him a one-year deal was like an incentive,” Davis told Alex’s official website. “It was a bit of a kick up the backside to make sure he starts the season the way he finished it.

“I told him if he gets in the team and does well – there’s your longer deal,” he added. “He’s not wrong and we’re not either so we have to compromise a bit.”
