Steve Davis says he was happy with Powell after the 17 year old was on the receiving end of a barrage of stick from Bradford fans.

The England U-17 international upset the Valley Parade faithful after going down in the box, winning the penalty that was eventually fired against the crossbar by Lee Bell.

Taking it in his stride, Powell was happy to play along with the crowd and, despite a few teasing gestures, manager Steve Davis backed Powell for his ‘mature reaction’.

Speaking to The Official Website, Davis says Powell’s match winning ability has seen the youngster singled out by the opposition, making him the obvious target for abuse.

‘Nick has very quick feet and teams are getting to know him and have to double up on him.

‘He had three or four in front of him when he was tripped for the penalty. He still managed to wriggle his way past them and the lad getting back caught his foot. I thought it was a penalty at the time.

‘The abuse he received after that was unfortunate. We could have taken him off but I left him on to help his education.

‘The players with technical skill are targeted and he got a bit of stick but I think he handled it in a really mature way and we were pleased with him.’
