Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is keen for improvements to be made to the Gresty Road pitch this summer.

“I’ve heard they are going to put more sand on it in the summer so I’ll bring my bucket and spade” – Steve Davis

Davis revealed he was forced to change tactics to a more direct style for the weekend defeat to Portsmouth simply because the playing surface was so bad that his players had found it almost impossible to pass the ball.

“We need to spend some money on it. Ever since I have been at Crewe the pitch has been like that,” Davis explained to the Crewe Chronicle. “Whatever they have been doing isn’t working.

“In fairness all the pitches have not been great, what with the amount of water we have had,” he continued. “But it is not the water here, it is the sand. I’ve heard they are going to put more sand on it in the summer so I’ll bring my bucket and spade!”
