Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis is searching for a suitable replacement following goalkeeper Scott Shearer joining Burton Albion on loan.

“We’re trying to get someone who is out of contract or is on a non-contract or without a club” – Steve Davis

That leaves the highly-rated Ben Garratt, 20, as the only recognised senior shot-stopper at Gresty Road.

The vastly experienced Shearer, 33, only arrived in the summer from Rotherham United but managed just three appearances before signing for the Brewers until the end of the season.

“What I don’t want to do is to loan a goalkeeper and waste a loan on someone sitting on the bench so because of that our list becomes a little bit smaller,” Davis commented in the Stoke Sentinel. “We’re trying to get someone who is out of contract in January or is on a non-contract somewhere or without a club.

“They don’t have to be superstars, they can be someone who is just capable of coming in to the team when needed and also being good back-up,” he added. “Depending on the age of that person will depend on whether we bring in a coach to work with them. If we can bring in another experience type then he can work with Ben.”
