Crewe Alexandra skipper Luke Murphy has progressed to a different level since taking the armband, according to manager Steve Davis.

“He has taken the role on and is growing in stature” – Steve Davis

Murphy, 23, is showing a far greater contribution since the departure of predecessor Ashley Westwood to Aston Villa over the summer.

He is currently rating higher in terms of goals and assists than in either of his previous two campaigns in the bottom division, although it is really his overall influence in the side which is most satisfying his manager.

“Luke is taking on the extra responsibility as captain and is producing consistent performances,” Davis told This is Staffordshire. “He a local lad and deserved the captain’s armband after Ash [Westwood] left.

“He has taken the role on and is growing in stature,” he continued. “He is playing with real maturity and is showing everyone what a good player he is.”
