Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis described it as his “biggest challenge” as the club face up to life without skipper Luke Murphy.

“It will be my biggest challenge by some distance” – Steve Davis

The 23-year-old midfielder completed a move to Championship side Leeds United earlier this week after a fee of around £1m was agreed between the two clubs.

“Now we have to rebuild and it won’t be easy. That’s not being negative, just realistic,” Davis told the Crewe Chronicle. “We’ll have to find a replacement. It’s very important we get the right fit and we can’t rush into it.

“It will be my biggest challenge by some distance but everyone at this club still expects to do well,” he continued. “We’ve exceeded all expectations before and we have to try to do it again. We all have to be positive, hungry, determined to do even better. I’m convinced we can.”

Already former Crewe youth player James Bailey, 24, of Derby County, and transfer-listed Stevenage midfielder Anthony Grant, 26, are amongst the names being considered as a possible replacement.
