Manager Steve Davis enjoyed a successful night as Crewe Alexandra progressed in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the expense of Shrewsbury Town at the New Meadow.

“I thought we controlled the first-half and caused them some real problems” – Steve Davis

Goals from Luke Murphy and Max Clayton put the visitors in charge before a solitary reply from home substitute Asa Hall following a mistake from goalkeeper Alan Martin.

“I am delighted. I thought we controlled the first-half and caused them some real problems,” Davis told Crewe’s official website. “Alan has made a mistake, but everyone is going to make mistakes. He has won us points earlier in the season, so we can forgive him for that.

“What really pleased me was the way we defended after that, I think the boys showed real determination to hang on to the result,” he added.

Crewe return to league action at Portsmouth this weekend and will be looking for a third successive victory on the south coast.
