Manager Steve Davis is concerned highly-rated teenager Max Clayton won’t ever sign a new deal for Crewe Alexandra.

“He is still learning and would benefit from having another year playing for us” – Steve Davis

The eighteen-year-old prospect was offered an extension last summer and has still to commit himself to the club despite several attempts from them to finalise his immediate future.

Davis is due to meet again with Clayton and his agent next week but conceded the situation wasn’t appearing particularly favourable at present.

“The signs do not look good but we’ll have to see,” he told the Crewe Chronicle. “We offered him a contract extension again at Christmas time and he rejected that.

“We will sit down with his agent and see what Max wants and what I think his future should be,” Davis added. “In my opinion he is still learning and would benefit from having another year playing for us at this level.”
