Crewe boss Dario Gradi has once again decided against signing Cypriot defender Petros Konnafis. Dario stated that “he was a good player, but not the type we need.” With Madjid Bougherra almost certain to depart the club, Dario decided to check once again on 26-year old Konnafis, who was watched by scout Glyn Chamberlain in January. The 6’2 defender is described by his agent as being a powerful and hard-working right footed central defender, and began his career playing for Omonia Nicosia FC, making his debut at the age of just 17. According to his agent, Konnafis went on to prove himself as undoubtedly the best and most gifted defender in the Cypriot League. Konnafis then joined Anorthosis Famagusta FC for ?600,000 though financial difficulties meant that they had to release him just one year later. In 2003, Konnafis joined AA Gent in Belgium before returing to his first club Omonia Nicosia FC in June 2004. Konnafis has scored 1 goal in his 22 appearances this season, whilst wearing the number 99 shirt. Konnafis has made 25 appearances for Cyprus, and has won the Cypriot League once, and the Cypriot Cup twice.
