Caretaker boss Dario Gradi says he was disappointed for his players after a 2-1 defeat at League One leaders Leicester City.
The evening saw a much improved performance from the Railwaymena and despite falling to an early Matt Fryatt goal a battling Crewe side fought on.
In the latest 4-5-1 formation, lone striker Calvin Zola reaped his awards for his hard work by grabbing the equaliser in the 30th minute. With a bit of luck the Alex could have taken the lead with Zola missing a 1-1 and a penalty appeal being turned down.
When you’re down at the bottom though you don’t get the luck and with less than 20 minutes on the clock Leicester’s Andy King converted a corner to leave the Foxes top and the Reds bottom. Further misery was added with news that the gap between Crewe and the safety zone had lengthened by a point to nine points.
Dario though had nothing but praise for his new look side, that saw a debut for winger Colin Daniel and a re-call for ‘keeper Stuart Tomlinson.
Speaking to crewealex.net, Dario said:
‘I thought the players gave it a real good go and they stuck to the game plan well. When you are telling players that we are going to be playing a different way and this is your instructions, you do worry a bit because they are not seasoned professionals with a lot of experience. I thought they stuck to the task well and they are disappointed to have lost the game, especially as the winning goal has come from a set-play.
‘We went with five in the midfeld but I thought that with us playing on the counter attack, Colin Daniel’s pace would allow him to get forward and support Calvin. He has scored goals in the reserves and I wanted to give him a chance.
‘We are disappointed not to have picked up a point because I thought we passed the ball a lot better this evening. We played through midfield and Kenny helps in there because he calms things down. I am disappointed for the players and the fans that came here, because we did give it a go and made it difficult for them.’
The Alex now have a free weekend before the mid-week FA Cup 2nd Round tie at either Grays or Carlisle (to be decided on Saturday). Then, on December 6th the biggest game of our season arrives with 23rd vs 24th at Cheltenham Town – maybe we’ll have a new manager by then?
