Dario Gradi says he may allow assistant-manager Steve Davis the chance to take charge of the side for the remaining three games of the season.

With the Alex out of both the play-off race and relegation dog fight there is next to nothing to play for at Gresty Road before the curtain closes on the season come May 8th, allowing Dario not only to try out a few fringe players but also a possible future manager.

Davis has been touted to eventually take the top job ever since being appointed Gudjon Thordarson’s assistant last summer, his chances further strengthened with the club’s beliefs now behind developing coaches as well as players.

With a mixture of opposition, with Accrington tomorrow, Rotherham next week and Bradford on the final day, it is the ideal opportunity for Davis offer something new to a stagnating club.

For Dario though it is simply a chance for him to get out and do some scouting, the 68 year old adding that three or four new players are real possibilities this summer.

I may allow Steve to take charge because it will be good for him and allow me to go out and scout.

‘We have the nucleus of a good team here if we can keep them all.

‘We need someone to head the ball out of our box because we have looked vulnerable from set plays and corners all season.

‘A clinical striker would be nice as well. They are not easy to find though.’
