Crewe have agreed to sign Liverpool centre back on a six-month loan deal. Having impressed in a recent friendly, Crewe were believed to be alerted to his availability following an unsuccessful enquiry regarding Neil Mellor.

The 20-year old is yet to feature competitively for his club, though he was included in the squad for the 2005 World Club Championship in. Since joining the Reds in 2002, O’Donnell has captained their Under 18 side, and was last year promoted to train with the first-team squad.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one, as Crewe have already signed three centre-backs this summer. Darran Kempson’s performance against Northampton was highly promising, though it appears Mark Roberts’ departure on loan to Halifax has culminated in a need for an extra centre-back. O’Donnell will wear the number 37 shirt.
