Two goals in four second-half minutes saw Crewe Alexandra come from behind at Colchester United and lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

Luke Garbutt’s deflected 25-yard free-kick earned the U’s the lead going into the break. But Chuks Aneke levelled with seventeen minutes remaining and fellow loanee Tom Hitchcock quickly added another.

Dominic Vose was wayward with an early effort for the hosts while on loan Mesca produced a weak attempt towards goalkeeper Sam Walker at the other end. Aneke then saw a header blocked from George Evans’ corner midway through the opening half.

Colchester were next to threaten through Marcus Bean’s low drive that flashed wide. However, Mesca then tripped Garbutt and the on loan Everton defender gave his side the lead from the subsequent free-kick.

Young Crewe keeper Ben Garratt was soon in action from both Blair Turgott and Craig Eastmond while the recalled Brad Inman replied by testing Walker. Hitchcock also volleyed wide for the visitors.

Kelvin Mellor reacted well to cover the threat of Jabo Ibehre after the break and Hitchcock headed Evans’ cross over before in turn trying to profit on a wayward back pass.

The visitors were showing more threat and Hitchcock was dragged back by the cautioned Brian Walker before Inman set up Aneke for a close-range equaliser on 73 minutes.

Three minutes later Hitchcock headed in Inman’s corner to earn the visitors the lead.

Midfielder Abdul Osman then saw a drive deflected wide before Garratt saved from Turgott and more spectacularly substitute Sanchez Watt during the later stages.
