Dario has failed in an attempt to bring former striker Luke Varney back to the club.

Dario is thought to have made an approach for the now Derby player with a view of a loan deal but, with Championship clubs taking an interest, Varney turned a move to Gresty Road down.

It was at Gresty Road that Varney made a name for himself. Arriving from minnows Quorn in 2003, Varney spent a couple of years in and out of the side before a season in League Two in 06/07 saw him really arrive. Scoring 25 goals in 42 appearances he was one half of the most lethal strike force in the League with strike partner Nicky Maynard.

He departed in the summer of 2007 when Charlton Athletic paid up to £2.5million for his services. However things soured after just over a year at the Addicks as Charlton slid down the leagues and along with their bank balance.

He joined Derby in November 2008 for over £1million but has never really settled in their first team, eventually enjoying spells on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Playing no part in last night’s Carling Cup game at Gresty Road, varney is now likely heading for QPR having had a few options whilst Dario will undoubtedly leave the door open for Luke indefinitely.
