Crewe are to discuss personal terms with Lincoln defender Jamie McCombe. After being rejected by teammate Gareth McAuley, Crewe have instead opted for his 6’5 defensive partner Jamie McCombe. Crewe have agreed to pay the necessary £5,000 in order to discuss personal terms with McCombe, and should terms be agreed, it is believed Crewe will have to pay no more than £100,000 for the 23-year old defender. Crewe will be keen to tie up the deal quickly, with Bristol City also reported to be interested.

Lincoln Chairman Steff Wright admitted, ‘We have given Crewe permission to speak to Jamie as they are willing to meet the release fee in his contract.’ Wright added that Lincoln are desperate to keep their Player-of-the-Season, but he has delayed signing a new contract. McCombe still has another year to run on his contract, but after missing out on promotion once again, Lincoln may be forced to allow their captain to move on.

McCombe impressed Dario and Neil Baker in both of Lincoln’s play-off semi-finals, as he demonstrated a dominance in the air, and an ability to distribute the ball from the back, although he isn’t the quickest. McCombe begun his career with Scunthorpe – scoring on his debut against Darlington. After a loan spell at Halifax, Scunthorpe released McCombe on a free – only to unsuccessfully attempt to prevent him signing for Lincoln.

Vital Crewe exclusively broke the news of Crewe’s interest in McCombe last week (Crewe Order Big Macs).
