Crewe look set to raid rivals Port Vale this summer for defender Gareth Owen with some reports suggesting a deal to bring the 28 year old to Gresty Road is as good as done.

Owen is currently nearing the end of his two and a half year contract at Vale Park and, with the unrest around the club this season, it’s thought he is looking for more certainty over his future.

The former Stockport man has been a long term target for Dario having tried to sign him just prior to the appointment of Gudjon Thordarson in January 2009. Back then Owen turned down the move in favour of a two and half year deal at Vale Park having been unconvinced by the Alex’s uncertain management situation.

Owen now faces the same situation at Vale on top of turmoil at board level for the Burslem club. It’s left the door wide open for Dario to finally add Owen to his back line.

A defender is pretty much number one priority this summer, as always seems to be the case, and having seen Owen as an integral part of one of the division’s strongest defences at Vale Park, it’s one signing you wouldn’t turn your nose up at.

Radio Stoke this morning are reporting that Owen has received offers of a two year deal from both Vale and Crewe whilst fan talk suggests the deal between the Alex and Owen has been signed and sealed already.

Watch this space I suppose.
