Crewe Alexandra missed a penalty but converted from a second opportunity in a 2-1 defeat at League One newcomers Fleetwood Town.

Following a scoreless opening half the visitors conceded straight after the restart when David Ball fired past debutant goalkeeper Scott Shearer.

Substitute Jamie Proctor – who had come on at half-time for Fleetwood’s new on loan striker Stephen Dobbie – then added a fine second seven minutes later.

The Railwaymen should have reduced the deficit but skipper Matt Tootle was denied from the spot by Chris Maxwell following Liam Hogan fouling Brad Inman.

Inman though did grab a late consolation when Hogan conceded a second penalty by fouling substitute Callum Saunders but it was too late to spark a revival.

The visitors had earlier been unlucky with Oliver Turton finding the woodwork from the edge of the area and Billy Waters also struck the underside of the crossbar.

Meanwhile, new goalkeeper Shearer displayed excellent reactions to keep out Dobbie at the other end.
