Crewe Alexandra fell back into the relegation places with a 1-0 defeat to a Chesterfield side strengthening their own play-off claims.
Gary Roberts’ cross midway through the opening half was headed in at the far post by advanced defender Tendayi Darikwa for a fourth successive victory for the hosts.
Alex keeper Paul Rachubka earlier thwarted Gboly Ariyibi at close-range and Roberts was blocked on the follow up.
At the other end, Uche Ikpeazu drove straight at Tommy Lee and Lauri Dalla Valle was also denied a couple of minutes later.
But the Spireites forged in front through Darikwa’s header as the half-hour approached, while Roberts then had a driven attempted diverted behind.
Chesterfield could have extended their advantage following the interval as Jay O’Shea – recalled after his rapid brace as a substitute at Yeovil Town in the last game – struck the woodwork.
Home striker Sam Clucas later had a shot deflected over as his colleagues remained on top while the visitors were restricted to relying on the break.
