Crewe are looking at a loan deal for Southend United left back Johnny Herd, according to Southend reports.

The 21 year old defender is spending a week training with the Alex and, if he impresses, he could be in line for a loan deal at Gresty Road according to the Echo

Herd is a product of the youth system at Roots Hall, making his debut in the FA Cup against Telford in 2008. He’s made over 20 starts since for Southend, though has been limited to just 15 minutes on the pitch this season.

Should the move come off, Herd would no doubt provide much needed cover for the left back spot, with Blanchett currently the only recognised left back at the club.

The news comes after Alex striker Calvin Zola turned down a loan move to Southend citing family reasons. Do we assume this was somehow a make weight, both sides needed to offload some wages before bringing in anyone new?

Either way, Herd would be an interesting signing. Blanchett is still a little “suspect” and I imagine the left back spot is the one defensive area Dario will still not be entirely certain about. Is Herd the right man though? If he can’t get in Southend’s side?
