Bristol Rovers’ Steve Phillips is set to sign on loan at Gresty Road next week once his loan spell at Shrewsbury ends this weekend.

Assistant manager Steve Davis revealed on Friday that the club are close to securing a new goalkeeper and Radio Stoke are saying that keeper is Steve Phillips of Bristol Rovers.

Currently on loan at Shrewsbury (a spell which ends today, Saturday), the 31 year old has played over 450 games for Bristol City and Bristol Rovers over a period of 12 years.

He now looks set to fill the troublesome spot between the sticks at Gresty Road. Having left David Button back at Spurs, transfer listed Steve Collis, snubbed Adam Legzdins and signed Bertrund Bossu on a two-month loan in the past few weeks, Dario is hoping the experienced Phillips can bring a bit of calm to the situation.

With Dario away with the youth team at Chelsea this week, his new assistant Steve Davis filled us in on the latest news. Speaking to crewealex.net, the former Nantwich boss said a little bit more experienced may be required:

‘The likelihood is that we could be bringing in another goalkeeper on loan next week. We are hopeful on that but they are never signed until they are signed.

‘We have been looking for better goalkeepers like we do for every position. Maybe a more experienced goalkeeper will help us and that is what we will aim to do.’

But having seen 21 goals fly past us in the last eight games it may be more than ‘experience’ to get this team going again.

As for this afternoon, well all signs point to Steve Collis returning to the first team, his first appearance in over a month following that display at Accrington.
