Crewe Alexandra conceded three times inside the opening twenty-five minutes on their way to a 4-1 defeat at play-off hopefuls Swindon Town.

Adam Rooney scored either side of on loan Massimo Luongo increasing their lead before Harry Davis pulled a goal back from the penalty spot. The Robins still had the final word with James Collins soon adding their fourth of the evening.

A lively start from the home side was rewarded by Rooney forcing in their opening goal after Alan McCormack’s fifth-minute free-kick had been headed back across.

The Alex’s response found Chuks Aneke’s long-range strike going over and fellow loanee Kevin Stewart heading wide, while Kelvin Mellor also went close before they slipped further behind courtesy of Luongo’s tremendous header from a Gary Roberts cross.

Both Rooney and Simon Ferry promised them further reward until the latter found enough space to head Roberts’ corner past Alan Martin to extend their advantage.

The visitors themselves went desperately close to a reply just ahead of the break with Byron Moore firing against the woodwork and Mark Ellis then narrowly over.

Ellis was replaced at the interval by teenager George Ray and the young defender soon witnessed former Crewe loanee Roberts having an effort ruled out for handball. Roberts also glanced a later opportunity marginally wide while substitute James Collins forced another stop from Martin

But it was the visitors who narrowed the deficit as Max Clayton was caught by goalkeeper Wes Foderingham after racing away from Aneke’s pass. Davis made no mistake from the spot to claim his first goal of the season.

However, six minutes later Collins stole possession from Michael West and surged away to add goal number four. He also headed another quality Roberts cross at Martin after Foderingham had already raced out to deny Moore at the other end.
