Crewe Alexandra were relegated following a 3-0 defeat at rivals Port Vale.

Louis Dodds earned the hosts an early lead which he added to with under ten minutes of the contest remaining.

Substitute JJ Hooper then increased the margin of victory in added time to end the visitors’ four-year stay at this level.

Alex’s recent signing Daniel Udoh was given a full debut but his side immediately fell into arrears when Dodds finished off the far post after a third-minute corner wasn’t properly cleared.

David Fox was too high in reply and James Jones suffered a similar outcome following a couple of half-time substitutions from the struggling visitors.

However, former Crewe winger Byron Moore was narrowly wide at the other end after coming off the bench, while another one-time Alex player, Anthony Grant, shot directly at Ben Garratt.

Full-back Ben Purkiss next lifted over for Vale before substitute Hooper was denied by Garratt and Dodds lashed the rebound high into the net with seven minutes remaining.

Hooper then curled in a late third goal as the visitors’ destiny was finally settled.
