Crewe Alexandra lifted themselves seven points clear of the relegation zone courtesy of Nicky Ajose’s first-half winner against Yeovil Town.

The 23-year-old on loan Leeds United forward made it eight goals in eleven games when meeting Marcus Haber’s cross seven minutes before the break.

Glovers skipper Joe Edwards brought an earlier save from Ben Garratt and Ajose hoisted over in reply, while Gozie Ugwu also forced the home keeper into action and James Hayter curled wide.

Good work from Jamie Ness then found Ajose trying a lob comfortably gathered by Artur Krysiak before the on loan Stoke City midfielder struck narrowly behind.

The Railwaymen still went ahead when Haber’s firm low 38th minute cross was slid home by their in-form marksman Ajose.

Former Crewe striker AJ Leitch-Smith’s 35-yard effort required Garratt to save at his top corner after the break while James Jones had a shot deflected behind at the other end.

Teenager Jones also sent another attempt over before Ajose came within inches of a second goal, when Oliver Turton allowed his 84th minute half-volley to come back off the inside of the post.

Danger-man Ajose was soon released again, this time by Ness, but conspired to fire wide as the home side held on for another massive victory.
