Dario Gradi has told the official website of his somewhat dubious plans to keep hold of striker Luke Varney as we go into next season.

Varney, who is the leagues joint 4th top scorer in League One has been linked to a host of teams, including the likes of Premiership side Aston Villa. Varney’s striker partner Maynard is another one that Alex fans will be hoping that the club can keep on., despite the lure of the higher leagues. It’s Dario’s intention not to rush into selling one (or both) of his prized youngsters, so to avoid the end of season disaster that the club had upon selling Dean Ashton (now of course at West Ham) to Norwich.

‘At a club like Crewe it’s also important to look at future players if our better players move on. At the moment we are looking for a potential replacement for Luke and further down the line Nicky.’

‘We cannot avoid the fact that we have to be a selling club and I’m sure someone like Luke will see what Rob Hulse and Dean Ashton have achieved and will want to move on at some point, but as I’ve said I’m in no hurry to let them go yet.’
