Crewe Alexandra came away with a well-earned point at high-flying Walsall after summer recruit Ben Nugent registered his first goal for the club.

The Saddlers had lost to Chelsea in the Capital One Cup in midweek, but wasted little time getting themselves on the scoreboard; returning leading marksman Tom Bradshaw immediately heading in Anthony Forde’s third-minute corner.

However, the Railwaymen were back level a quarter-of-an-hour later as Nugent drove in from the edge of the area after David Fox’s free-kick wasn’t properly cleared.

Both Milan Lalkovic and Bradshaw tried to restore the home advantage but the visitors remained strong despite plenty of pressure after the break.

First Forde missed a great chance after a flicked on header and Jason Demetriou soon crashed a shot onto the crossbar.

Alex keeper Ben Garratt then reacted superbly to thwart substitutes Jordan Cook and Kieron Morris, before the former hoisted another late chance over.
