Crewe Alexandra moved off the bottom of the table after being held to a scoreless home draw by Chesterfield at Gresty Road

It was the fourth time in their last six games that the Railwaymen had maintained a clean-sheet but they failed to make it count at the other end.

Goalkeeper Ben Garratt was called into action early on by Jimmy Ryan from around 25-yards and then collected an Ian Evatt header.

Spirites’ leading scorer Eoin Doyle had already threatened to increase his own personal tally, and then struck directly at Garratt in an opening half of few opportunities.

Home boss Steve Davis replaced on loan striker Danny Haynes with teenager George Cooper at the break, but it was Gary Roberts soon having an effort disallowed for offside for the visitors.

Substitute Cooper crossed towards the other end and Brad Inman couldn’t get his header on target, while former Alex loanee Roberts replied marginally wide.

Roberts later sent another effort over and Inman was denied by the smothering Tommy Lee, who also saved from both Ollie Turton and Greg Leigh before Sam Morsy drove straight at Garratt.
